Principal’s Perspective

Welcome back to all our families and I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday break.

We have a very busy term ahead, starting this Wednesday with our ANZAC ceremony, NAPLAN, year 6 camp and swimming lessons for those in Pre-Primary to year 4 to name just a few of the events. I would urge all parents to keep an eye out for information via Connect, the school web page and always check student bags for notes.

I would like to welcome Miss Bianca Marshall as our new Library Officer. Whilst taking over from Mrs Pullman is a big task I am sure Miss Marshall will put her own stamp on our library and become a much valued member of our school community. I would like to thank Mrs Anderson and Mrs Bandy for doing such a good job since Mrs Pullman’s departure, whilst we completed our selection process for this pivotal role.

At the end of term 1 our year 6 student councillors met Jessica Shaw, Member for Swan Hills, at Parliament House for lunch. I am sure the students will have some lasting memories of this adventure which included travel by public transport and some time in Kings Park. I would like to thank Miss Wiggins and Mr Hunt for organising this event and for supervising the students on the day.

I would like to remind all families that on Friday May 31 there will be no school for students. All staff will be engaged in professional development on that day. This is the Friday prior to the Monday WA Day long weekend.

NAPLAN

Week 3 will see students in year 3 and year 5 complete NAPLAN. This will be our first year completing NAPLAN on-line. These tests provide the school with valuable data on the progress of students and the performance of various teaching programs. Please encourage your children not to worry about NAPLAN and to just try their best.

Before School

I would like to remind all parents and students that the Nature Play and the Megatoy are out of bounds before school. Students arriving before 8.30am are to sit outside the library or with their parents outside their classroom.

We are, however, happy for any parents to stay until 3.30pm to supervise their children playing on the Megatoy. The Nature Play is out of bounds after school.

Names On Clothing

Now we are entering the colder months it is timely to remind all families to ensure that all student jumpers have names recorded in them. This will increase the chance of them being returned should they be lost or misplaced around the school.

Student Medication

If your child needs medication, please pop in for a chat with me. We are happy for you to come to the school and give your child medication but if you need us to administer it then:

  • The medicine must be in the original packaging, which indicates the student’s name and required dosage. Please don’t pop pills out of their packaging, rather cut off the number we require and send along with the box.
  • We aim to have medications administered at 1.00pm.

Please note we do not store paracetamol or ibuprofen for general student use.

Short Term Medication – 2 weeks

  • Parents must fill in an Administration of Medication form from the front office.
  • We can assist with medication such as antibiotics that are required 4 times a day (3 times a day can be managed at home) and paracetamol or ibuprofen for an acute injury.

Long Term Medication

  • Parents must make a time to meet with me and fill in a Student Health Care Summary and maybe a Management / Emergency Response Plan. We may require a medical plan / letter from the doctor depending on the nature of the health condition.
  • Changes to dosage must be reflected by a doctor’s letter before we can implement a change at school.
  • If your child requires on-going or intermittent pain relief by paracetamol or ibuprofen, they too will require a Student Health Care Summary with a doctor’s sign off. We are unable to administer medication at a student’s request.

NAPLAN Online

This term the year 3 and 5 students will be completing NAPLAN assessment commencing on Tuesday May 14.

It will start with the writing assessment – on paper for year 3 and online for year 5.

All subsequent tests will be on line.

Due to the limited bandwidth the testing schedule has been extended to a nine day period.

This will cause disruption to the library schedule as the ICT lab will need to be used for testing.

It is important for all students to have good headphones for testing as a lot of the test requires students to listen and respond. In the numeracy test they can have the question read to them through their headphones. If you are a parent of a year 3 or 5 student can you please check that your child has suitable headphones so they can have the best opportunity during testing.

Bread

We are fortunate to be supplied varying quantities of bread and bread products from the Ellenbrook Collective and Manna. At times we have more than we need so rather than it going to waste it will be placed outside the admin office for collection. Feel free to take what you need.

Room 3’s Arbor Values

This term in Room 3 we have been making sure we are consistently displaying our Arbor Values. If we see a class member showing an Arbor Value, we write them a note and pop it in their bag. This way we can acknowledge their great work and make them feel like they belong and are a valued member of Room 3.

Dealing with disappointment

By Professor Matt Sanders, founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program

Despite what certain sport shoe commercials might have you believe, life isn’t always about winning.

It is equally important for the development of healthy self-esteem that children learn how to deal with disappointment.

As a reaction to not getting what they want, such as being chosen for a team, children may sometimes put themselves down, saying things like: “I’m dumb”, “you hate me” or “I’m just stupid”. If this happens, try to avoid being too sympathetic. Instead encourage your child to try again after the set-back and to enjoy the activity or game even if they aren’t the winner.

Rather than simply reassuring your child that everything will be okay, you can help your child develop their own sense of worth by letting them know that you understand their feelings of disappointment and that you are there to help them work out a reasonable way of dealing with that disappointment.

Remember too, when you’re helping your child with an activity or with homework concentrate on effort not results. Praising your child for trying and making an improvement will motivate them to continue trying at a difficult task.

All parents are invited to attend Triple P seminars at Arbor Grove Primary School in Term 2. Facilitated by school psychologist Krista Bingham, the seminars will include a presentation and time for discussion and questions. Parents may attend one, two or all three sessions.

When: Fridays 24 May, 7 and 21 June 2019

Time: 9am – 11am

May – Federal Election

The Federal Election is looming, and everyone will be required to vote yet again.

With so many people coming through the school, this day is a great opportunity for the P&C to run a BBQ, Coffee Station and Cake Stall and raise some serious funds to help with funding upcoming projects around our school.

We are looking for Volunteers to help us run the stalls throughout the day and we would appreciate as much or as little time as you can offer.

We are also asking if families can possibly help with contributing towards this event. We are looking for: All forms of cakes, muffins, slices, cupcakes. You name it we will accept it.

Eggs (if you have chickens or know of people with chickens, we require a large number, approx. 25-30 dozen), Bacon, Rolls, Sausages, Onions, Sauces, Drinks including Bottled Water, Cool Drinks, Tea Bags, Coffee Satchels, Sugar and Milk.

If you can help out in any way large or small, please contact our Fundraising Coordinator Amy at agpsp-cfundraising@outlook.com.au or fill in the volunteer form which can also be found in the office and drop it in the P&C box.

Family Fun Night

The Fundraising committee have a few options we are considering for a Family Fun night. To help with our decision we will be running a Poll.

From the three options below which event would you most like to see this year and likely to attend?

  1. Family Bingo Night
  2. Adults only Bingo Night
  3. Family Outdoor Movie Night

If you would like to cast your vote, please write your selection on a note and drop it in the P&C box outside the office or alternatively vote via our Facebook page - Arbor Grove Primary School P&C Association Inc.
