Well we are very nearly at the end of another very hectic and unfortunately COVID impacted Term.
I would like to thank all the parents for your ongoing support of the school and the staff during these challenging times, congratulate the students for their resilience and publicly acknowledge the efforts of all of the wonderful staff at Arbor Grove Primary School.
We have had our share of COVID cases in recent weeks and I encourage all parents to consider using the two week holiday to ensure their children are vaccinated against COVID and flu.
The Minister for Education announced some changes to the operational guidelines for schools that will come into force at the commencement of Term 2. We are waiting on the operational details of this announcement and will then review our Term 2 operational plans. We will announce any changes to the school community at the earliest opportunity.
Staffing Changes
I would like to advise the school community that Mr Heard, Mr Edwards and Ms Nelson will be leaving us at the end of this Term. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank them all for their work with us and wish them well for the future.
I am pleased to advise that Ms Beth McBain will be joining us from Term 2 as our permanent Performing Arts Teacher, Mr Sam Hall will be joining us to work in Room 16 for the remainder of the year and we hope to have a replacement Technologies teacher sorted by the end of the week. I am also delighted to announce that Mrs Lisa Wight will be joining us as our Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer for Term 2 and Mr Darren Blackburn will be returning to Arbor Grove as our Cleaner in Charge.
Summer Carnival
Congratulations to the students in years 5 and 6 that represented the school with great distinction at the recent Summer Carnival. Whilst we may not have won I have had very good feedback on the behaviour and sportsmanship of our students.
Winter
As hard as it is to imagine – winter is coming and with that rain and cold weather. Please ensure your children have warm clothing (with their name on it) ready for the start of term 2.
ANZAC Day
We will recognise ANZAC day during week 10. Mrs Newman, Mr Williams and Mrs Ellen have been working hard with the student councillors to prepare our virtual (and COVID compliant) ceremony.
I am hopeful that next year will see a return to the more traditional and whole school celebration and commemoration of this significant day.
Happy Holidays
I would like to wish every family a safe and enjoyable term break. I hope you avoid COVID isolation and get to relax and have some fun. Students are requested to avoid coming onto the school site over the break.

Room 14
Despite all the challenges thrown at us this term, the children have settled well into year 3 in Room 14. During maths activities the children have been investigating symmetry. They made butterflies, being careful to mark the line of symmetry and completed symmetrical pictures of flowers and beetles. We are definitely getting the hang of it.
The children worked in small groups to play BANG! with sight words and maths facts. Loads of fun was had by all!
Speedy Maths is another popular activity. Heads down, tails up and blissful silence while they work for five minutes on maths problems. The children are encouraged to use a multitude of strategies to solve problems, and explain how they worked it out. We have been learning strategies such as counting on from the largest number, counting back, bridging to 10 or 20, doubles or near doubles and using fact families and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Free Time Friday has proven very popular with many different activities on offer. Finger knitting was a surprise favourite as I am sure many of you know!
Lego and playing schools are also popular choices.
Harmony Day was a huge success in Room 14. Some wore traditional dress and most remembered to wear orange. The children participated in a range of activities designed to highlight Australia’s wonderful multicultural society and the importance of inclusivity and a sense of belonging.
Harmony Day
It was wonderful to see so many children dressed in their traditional clothing on Monday 21 March.
They took such pride in their cultural background. Thanks to the family members who assisted them in participating in the day.

Did you know you can access the Library Catalogue from anywhere in the world with your childs’ log in details?
This means you will be able to see what they have on loan and when it is due back! Students are also able to create wish lists and write book reviews their peers will be able to see. Not to mention they will be the first ones to see all of the new books ready to reserve!
