Things are beginning to get busy with NAPLAN starting, swimming lessons just around the corner and first semester reporting not far away.
COVID
COVID is continuing to impact on classes as both students and teachers encounter the virus. I would like to acknowledge the amazing efforts of Mrs McCabe who has worked tirelessly for many weeks sourcing relief staff, juggling timetables and ensuring that all classes run with as little disruption as possible.
Parents are reminded that following the relaxing of the COVID restrictions students will no longer be released prior to the siren unless they have been signed out via the front office.
We have begun handing out ONE BOX (20 tests) of Rapid Antigen Test’s (RATs) per student. If you have not collected yours, please call into the school at the earliest opportunity. Tests must be collected by an adult, they cannot be sent home with the children.
NAPLAN
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 are currently completing the annual NAPLAN testing. This is our third year completing NAPLAN online and it is pleasing to see that our systems are handling this task without problem.
It is also pleasing to see the students demonstrating our ARBOR values by doing their best, showing great organisation by getting to school on time and being resilient when the questions have gotten harder. Congratulations to all of our students.
Whilst the NAPLAN tests are a snapshot in time they do provide the school with valuable data on student progress and the performance of our various teaching programs.
Winter
Now we are heading into winter and with that will come rain and colder days. I would encourage all students to ensure they have some warm clothing (preferably not hoodies) with their names in them ready for the colder days.
Sick Children
It is important that any students that are unwell, particularly those with flu like symptoms, do not attend school. Please remember to advise the school by phone or email when your child is unwell.
Oval
The City of Swan have advised the school that they will have an electrical contractor delivering and erecting light towers at the Charlottes Vineyard Playing Fields from 16 to 18 May 2022. This is to upgrade the oval to 100 lux lighting for night games.
There will be trucks and cranes on site and one of the carparks, either the eastern or southern carpark will need to be partially closed to ensure safety around the machinery. Please avoid the area and the workmen when they are on site.
Parking
The City of Swan community regularly identifies school parking safety concerns as a priority. In order to address these community safety concerns, the City has developed a school parking process. To assist with understanding these local laws, the City of Swan has developed a School Road Safety Guide which is available on the City’s website via the following link www.swan.wa.gov.au/Your-City/Parking-travel/Parking/Safe-and-legal-parking.
Over the next few weeks the City’s Parking Enforcement and Community Safety Advocate teams will commence patrols to capture images of vehicles parked in contravention to the local laws. Whilst the City aims to address these concerns without imposing penalties, caution notices will only be issued for a limited period with infringement notices with applicable penalties being imposed for the remainder of the school year.
FAST
This term the school is running the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program in partnership with Clan Midland. FAST® is an internationally acclaimed parent engagement program that helps children thrive by building strong relationships at home. I hope the families participating enjoy the program and that we can complete the program without any COVID19 interruptions.
Thank you to my staff that support the program as members of the team or as volunteers giving up their own time. Arbor Grove is very fortunate to have dedicated staff and a community partner, such as Clan Midland who can support our school community.

Year 5 and 6 Students - Social Media Concerns
There have recently been reports of students in Year 5 and 6 who are using social media inappropriately, in particular TikTok and Snapchat. These social media platforms have age restrictions where users need to be 13 years old, due to the possible exposure to explicit and inappropriate content.
Unfortunately, issues that are caused on social media can affect relationships at school, as well as the mental health of children and young people.
Please talk to your child about the importance of being safe online, as it is a powerful tool and they need to be protected.
Please see the below resources which will provide parents with further information.

So far this semester the Year 4’s have been very busy and engaged in a range of learning experiences. In HASS the Year 4’s have been learning about the history of our First Nations people. They have been investigating the Aboriginal people’s knowledge of their environment, land management practices including the different resources they used to create shelters. The students then participated in a STEM challenge to build a newspaper shelter, which needed to accommodate two students. This activity focused not only on the skills required to construct a shelter but also to demonstrate the Arbor Values in a collaborative learning environment. It was great to see the students engaged and participating whilst using their communication skills effectively.
In Art students have been focusing on the seven elements of Art: shape, line, colour, form, value, space and texture. We have looked at various artists as inspiration across the world including Australia, Japan, Italy and America. The students have been producing some masterpieces of their own. Enjoy!

Arbor Grove Primary School - Secondhand Uniform Sales
The success of the P&C depends on the involvement of the parents and the wider school community. A successful P&C can add immeasurably to the success and appeal of the school through ensuring that students have access to the best resources available and that parents are both informed and have a voice.
All members of the school community are welcomed and encouraged to get involved in the P&C. This does not necessarily mean that you need to take an official role.
Our next P&C Meeting will be held back on school grounds, Monday 23 May at 6.45pm in the staffroom.
Local Member of Parliament Jessica Shaw will be attending so it’s a great opportunity to find out what’s happening in our community AND raise any issues affecting our school. We welcome anyone who is interested in attending and would love to see you there.
