It has been a busy first half of the term but it is unlikely that things are going to slow down any time soon.
Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is restarting soon. I would encourage everyone to keep an eye out for further information. It will be wonderful seeing students tucking into some toast, milo and other treats again.
COVID and FLU
COVID and the Flu are having an impact on classes as both students and teachers encounter either or both. We are working our hardest to ensure that all classes run with as little disruption as possible.
Parents are reminded to keep children with the flu, a cold or COVID home so as to avoid the risk of spreading the illness.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to the students in years 3 and 5 for successfully completing NAPLAN. Given the challenges of COVID they showed great resilience and it was great seeing the students trying their best.
Year 6 Activity Days
The year 6 students have had two days of good weather and amazing activities at Ern Halliday. Thank you to the year 6 teachers for organising these activities against the uncertainty of the COVID situation. I understand that teachers and students had two great days. There are more activity days ahead for these students later in the year.
Swimming Lessons
Week one of swimming lessons have gone well. It always amazes me how often thunder and torrential rain appears at the start of swimming lessons. Well done to the students on their behaviour so far whilst on the bus and at the pool.
School Development Day
Parents are reminded that the staff will be involved in professional learning on Friday 3 June. Students will not attend school on this day.
Winter
Now we are heading into winter and with that will come rain and colder days. I would encourage all students to ensure they have some warm clothing (preferably not hoodies) with their names in them ready for the colder days.
Parking
The City of Swan community regularly identifies school parking safety concerns as a priority. In order to address these community safety concerns, the City has developed a school parking process. To assist with understanding these local laws, the City of Swan has developed a School Road Safety Guide which is available on the City’s website via the following link www.swan.wa.gov.au/Your-City/Parking-travel/Parking/Safe-and-legal-parking.
Over the next few weeks the City’s Parking Enforcement and Community Safety Advocate teams will commence patrols to capture images of vehicles parked in contravention to the local laws. Whilst the City aims to address these concerns without imposing penalties, caution notices will only be issued for a limited period with infringement notices with applicable penalties being imposed for the remainder of the school year.

Science Rocks at Arbor Grove Primary School
Students from Pre Primary to Year 6 have been investigating Biological Sciences and developing their Science Inquiry Skills. Students have had the opportunity to get up close and personal with stick insects watching them go through their different stages of growth. Some students allowed the stick insects to walk up their arms! Students observed the life cycle of the Gold Mystery Snail and eagerly watched as their offspring hatched from egg clusters.
To embrace the journey of learning, students looked at aspects such as the basic needs of living things. The Pre Primary students created their own pet grass head and took home their own pet worm.
Students in year one ventured on a minibeast hunt around the school using magnifying glasses and discovered an array of different animals. They looked at how these animals moved and role played some of the animals they saw. They looked at parts of animals and plants, labelling what these parts are used for. But most of all the students enjoyed discovering all about worms and snails.
Students in year two have been exploring different characteristics of life cycles in animals and plants such as the stages of the frog, butterfly, human and apple. As well as learning that all animals have offspring, usually with two parents and using technology to discover the different names of these offspring.
While year 3 students have been recognising the characteristics of living things such as growing, moving and reproducing by comparing animals and plants. Students have participated in object scavenger hunts in the science room and sorted these objects based on characteristics of living, non-living and once-living. To further improve their technology skills students created a Powerpoint on the characteristics of the five vertebrate groups mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles.
Students in year four have been learning and drawing life cycles of plants and animals, especially tomatoes and bees. Do you know tomatoes are fruit and not vegetables? To enhance their labelling skills students have been drawing labelled cross sections of fruit and flowers and even labelled diagrams of the pollinator of plants the bee. Students also have been busily working in groups to create an informative diorama display about bees by using technology such as pic collage.
Students in year five have been describing, drawing and listing adaptations for animals and plants suited for Australian environments such as the Australian deserts, explaining how particular adaptations such as nocturnal behaviour, camouflage help survival and enhancing their mapping skills by drawing and labelling the deserts found in Australia.
The year six students have been investigating bread. They have been enhancing their observational skills and discovering certain bread are leavened where are other types are unleavened, creating flow charts on the bread making process, investigating microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, viruses and labelling bread mould on bread.

The success of the P&C depends on the involvement of the parents and the wider school community. A successful P&C can add immeasurably to the success and appeal of the school through ensuring students have access to the best resources available and that parents are both informed and have a voice.
All members of the school community are welcomed and encouraged to get involved in the P&C. This does not necessarily mean that you need to take an official role.
P&C Meeting
Local Member of Parliament Jessica Shaw attended our P&C meeting this week. It was great to hear about all the projects happening in our community and the ways in which Jessica is supporting local schools. She is very happy to be contacted about any local issues.
