Hello All
Term 3 is flying by and yet we are just about to enter a very busy phase with Book Week, School Photos, Faction Carnival and much much more.
Cross Country
Congratulations to Mr Williams and all the students that participated in the Interschool Cross Country. It was fantastic hearing how all students tried their best and showed exemplary sportsmanship and behaviour. I believe your crowning as Champions was well deserved.
NAIDOC
I would like to thank Mrs Newman, Mrs Wight and Committee for their organisation of the school NAIDOC assembly. Despite inclement weather the day went very well. The dance group from Ellenbrook Secondary was a hit with the students and it is great seeing the students celebrating such a culturally significant event with such enthusiasm.
Open Night
Next Wednesday, 24 August, is our Open Night. I hope all families are as excited as we are that this event can be held this year, having been a victim of COVID in recent times.
I hope that all families will be able to attend the school between 4-6pm to see some of their children’s work. We respectfully ask that Parents wear a mask when in the classroom, that any high school aged siblings do not attend on the night and that once classrooms have been visited that families head home.
Book Week
Next Wednesday is also our Book Week parade. I am very excited to see the students in costumes and celebrating the joy of books! I understand that several of the teachers have gone “all out” on there costumes so it should be a great day (weather permitting).
There are lots more events coming up including school photos and the Abor Grove colour run!
Planning 2023
Kindy numbers for 2023 are filling slowly, which is not unexpected given the slow down in new housing in our catchment, so unless things change we may only have three kindy classes (60 students) and commence a wait list after that. Please encourage anyone you know in our catchment to enrol now whilst we have a few spots left.
If you are leaving Arbor Grove PS at the end of the year we would appreciate if you could let the office know at the earliest opportunity. This information is very helpful when we start organising class lists etc.
Breakfast Club
It is fantastic to see Breakfast Club operating out of the canteen. This is a much more functional space and will allow the Breakfast Club to continue to grow. It certainly has become an integral part of Arbor Grove. I would like to thank Mrs Quinn, Mrs Hawkins and their band of happy helpers for providing this wonderful service to our school community.

Mathematics
Maths Incursion
This term all students will have the opportunity to take part in our Maths Incursion - Professor Maths. Notes have previously been sent home and extra copies are available from the front office. The cost of the incursion is $3.00 per student. This amount has been subsidied by the school for each child. Permission slips and money are due by Monday 22 August 2022.
During week 7 all students will be taking part in our Celebration of Maths Week. Students will not only have the opportunity to attend the incursion but will also each day explore maths in a fun and engaging way.
Maths Games
Here’s another Maths Game for all the family to enjoy.
“LARGEST NUMBER CARD GAME”
Skills learned: Number recognition, place value, and strategic thinking.
Equipment Required: Pack of Cards
Deal 2, 3 or 4 cards to each player.
Players arrange their cards to make the largest possible number with the cards that they have been dealt, e.g. with cards 2, 5 and 8, a player would make 852.
The player with the largest number in each round keeps the cards they were dealt.
The game ends when there are not enough cards to deal out. The winner is the player who has collected the most cards.
Variations:
- Try making the smallest number possible.
- Try dealing 5 or 6 cards.
- Try to make decimal numbers.

Room 3
This term in Pre Primary we have been practising for the Faction Carnival! We are very excited to compete in our factions, especially our team games. Even though the weather hasn’t been the greatest, it hasn’t stopped us from practising unders and overs and modified leaderball games. We are also practising our ARBOR Value of displaying good sportsperson ship through cheering, high fives and being gracious winners.
In Maths we have been looking at all the different ways we can create numbers. We have begun to partition the numbers into two parts, for example: showing that 6 can be 2 and 4 more but can also be 3 and 3 more. We have been exploring this concept with ten frames, different coloured counters and unifix cubes. As part of our Maths we have been consolidating the ways to make 10 using our snowball activity. We have lots of fun writing the number sentences, scrunching them up and throwing them in the container.
We are also discussing positional language. We are using words like behind, in front, next to and in between to describe the position of objects and to give directions. This has also linked with our Geography unit where we are discussing where we are in the world. We have created some simple maps, looked at what is in a map and why we use them.
In Art we are looking at several types of art from various cultures and countries around the globe. So far we have looked at Kenya and the beautiful, colourful Kente Cloths they create there, and we weaved our very own colourful artwork. We have also celebrated NAIDOC week by painting some Australian animals in the style of Aboriginal dot artists.
In Health we have been discussing our feelings. We are learning that it is okay to feel all types of emotions, even ones that make us feel bad, because we can use the skills that we have learned to overcome our bad emotions. We are learning about who we can trust, who we can go to if we are scared and how we can control our feelings so other people can stay safe. We have learnt how to do the turtle if we feel overwhelmed.
EISA Cross Country Carnival
Friday 5 August, 40 students ranging from years 3-6 were given the opportunity to represent the school at the 2022 EISA Cross Country Carnival. The students showed good sportsperson ship and encouragement for others throughout the day, as well as continuously demonstrating high levels of enthusiasm!
Arbor Grove came 1st overall with many of our students achieving fantastic results individually.
Ellie – 1st Year 6 Girls
Brady – 1st Year 5 Boys
Manaia – 1st Year 3 Girls
Well done to all of the staff and students who attended on the day and for representing the school with pride.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Join the adventure!
We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children. Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship? All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022.
You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge. Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends.
Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language.
There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.
Sign up your children on the website to begin their magical journey.

Faction Carnival Friday 16 September
This year the P&C will be offering a face painting and hair spray stall in conjunction with our bake sale stall.
Thank you to those people who have offered their help with our sweets and savoury stall at this year’s Faction Carnival, we’ve had an incredible response.
Do you love to bake? The P&C would greatly appreciate donations of both sweet and savoury items that can be sold throughout the day.
We are also on the lookout for families to volunteer some of their time to support us in operating our stall for 30 min blocks during the carnival.
Many hands make light work and we are counting on your support so that everyone can enjoy the day and watch their children.
We still need helpers throughout the day, please get in touch by email to Rhi at agpsp-cfundraising@outlook.com.au with your preferred time.
Grounds and Amenities Committee Busy Bee
With the weather hopefully starting to clear in the coming weeks, we will be arranging a Busy Bee for around the school gardens. Starting with the raised garden beds, preparing them and planting something new.
A date is still to be set for a sunny Sunday and we will be looking for all the help we can get when the time comes. If you and your family love to get in and around the garden, we would love your help!
More information will follow in the coming few weeks but in the meantime please email agpsp-csecretary@outlook.com.au if you would be keen.
