Hello All
Public Holiday 22 September
As you will be aware, the Prime Minister has announced a public holiday as a national day of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 22 September. This means that the school will be closed on this day.
It is important to note that the school term officially ends on Friday 23 September and students are expected to attend school on this day. All previous arrangements for Friday 23 September remain in place and it will be “business as usual.” I appreciate that this may cause some inconvenience but given the circumstances I appreciate your understanding. I look forward to welcoming students back in Term 4.
Faction Carnival
What an exciting week this week is! We have our faction carnival, which is the chance for the students to demonstrate their sporting talents, show their ARBOR values and have a fun day away from the classroom.
It will be fantastic to have parents on site cheering students on. Parents are reminded that they are not allowed in the bays during the day.
Students are reminded to bring hats, sunscreen up, bring a water bottle and wear faction colours.
Colour Run
Last Friday we had the ARBOR Colour Run. This was a great fun time and allowed the students to celebrate demonstrating the ARBOR values. A big thank you to the staff and parents that helped with set up and pack up.
Planning 2023
If you are leaving Arbor Grove PS at the end of the year we would appreciate if you could let the office know at the earliest opportunity. This information is very helpful when we start organising class lists etc.
Evacuation Drill
We tested our evacuation processes this week. Drills undertaken in the past week are an important part of keeping our community safe, particularly as we near the bushfire season.

Mathematics
Maths Game
Here’s another Maths Game for all the family to enjoy.
“Build It Big or Build It Small”
Skills learned: Number recognition, place value, and strategic thinking.
Equipment Required: 6, 8 or 10 sided dice, scrap paper or a whiteboard
Decide whether we are trying to make a larger or a smaller number. It’s easier to start big and switch it too small for variety.
Decide on the what place value your number will be (tens, hundreds, thousands…). Players place dashes on their paper/whiteboard to indicate the value of the number. If you’re working on hundreds, players would make 3 dashes, 4 for thousands, and so on.
Players take turns rolling the dice the same number of times as the dashes. Each time a person rolls, he/she must think logically to place the number shown on the dice, on one of the dashes. For example, if you are working on a large number and roll a six, it would go on the largest place value space but if you were working on making a small number, it would go on the smallest place value space. Once players have placed a number, it cannot be moved.
The person with the highest (or lowest, depending upon the game’s goal) wins a point.
Variation:
- Make this a decimal place value game by having the kids draw a decimal before or within the dashes.

Physical Education
Throughout this term in physical education, the students have primarily focused on preparing for the upcoming athletics carnival to take place on the 14 and 16 of September. Students have practised individual and team events including shot put, turbo javelin, long jump, flag relay, leader ball, baton relay and many more. Students have not only practised these events during their physical education lessons, but they have also had the opportunity to practise these events in junior, intermediate and senior sport. These sessions were used to determine which students from each year group would represent their faction in the carnival. All the students have practised very hard and are all very excited for Friday’s carnival. We encourage families to come and support their children on Friday as they compete.
Colour Run
Last Friday, the PBS committee organised a colour run for all students in Kindegarten - Year 6 to recognise the students who have demonstrated their ARBOR values continually throughout the term. The students had the opportunity to complete varying obstacles around a course which involved using the skills of crawling, running, balancing and many more. The teachers got amongst the fun as well with everyone coming off the oval at the end of the day full of colour powder. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by the students, teachers, and parents. We would like to acknowledge the hard work that the PBS committee have done for this event to go ahead. We also appreciate the P&C Members who donated their time to help with the set up and packing away.

WACSSO - Strengthening the Road to Resilience
The Western Australian Council of State School Organisations Inc (WACSSO) is the peak body representing parents of public school students in Western Australia, with a membership of more than 650 P&C Associations statewide.
This past weekend three of our members were privileged to attend the WACSSO 2022 Conference themed 'Strengthening the Road to Resilience'. We were honored to have met formidable women who have paved the way to create a environment where we can support and empower our children.
These include the Minister for Education and Training - Hon Sue Ellery BA MLC, Director General Department of Education - Lisa Rodgers and the Commissioner for Children and Younge people - Jacqueline Mcgowan-Jones.
Our keynote presentation was from Rabia Siddique, a woman whose spirit and resilience is nothing short of amazing. She reminded us why creating a safe space at school can change a person’s life.
We met with a student panel who shared with us their voices of the future and reminded us why what we do is so important.
We attended workshops on Climate Collaborations and Strategies and Techniques to build resilience and alleviate childhood anxiety.
We also had the chance to talk directly with suppliers on how best to help our school.
After two extremely full on days we left feeling motivated, inspired and extremely excited to share everything that we learnt and put some of what we learnt into practice in our school and community.
